STARS TIE MIAMI FC 1-1, WARREN SAVES THIRD PENALTY IN THREE GAMES

BLAINE, Minn. (May 15, 2010) – Johnny Menyongar scored his first goal of the season in the 55th minute Saturday night, but the NSC Minnesota Stars couldn’t hold the lead and settled for a 1-1 draw with Miami FC. Paulo Araujo Jr. scored Miami’s only goal in the 73rd minute.

Goalkeeping was the theme of the night for both teams. Joe Warren saved his third penalty kick in three games, and the Stars peppered Miami’s goal with 11 shots, eight of which were on goal. Unfortunately for the home team, Miami goalkeeper Caleb Patterson made seven saves, including three from close range, to keep the Stars from earning all three points.

The Stars began the game brightly, with plenty of possession in Miami’s defensive end. Two-Boys Gumede, starting at defense instead of his usual outside midfield position, dazzled the crowd early with some fancy footwork. Despite the quality possession, it took 20 minutes for the Stars to get a shot on goal.

When the chance came, though, the Stars nearly found themselves up 1-0. Brian Cvilikas intercepted a poorly hit back pass to Patterson, but his touch around the Miami goalkeeper took him away from the goal. By the time he could turn his body to shoot, Miami’s defense had recovered to clear the ball off the goal line.

Cvilikas was involved in the Stars next good scoring chance. The 6-foot-3 forward got onto the end of a Chris Clements cross at the back post, nodding the ball back across goal. The ball landed at Daniel Wasson’s feet, but Patterson blocked both his point-blank shot and his follow-up attempt.

Miami regrouped at halftime and started the second half with more threatening possession than in the first. Abe Thompson tried his luck in the 51st minute from the top of the penalty area, but Brian Kallman slid in front of his shot at the last minute to prevent it from getting to Warren.

“The defense I love is the defense we played tonight, where they don’t even let the shots reach me,” Warren said after the game.

STARS' 10 MEN FALL TO AZTEX 2-1

Stars can't make lead stand up after first-half red card

BLAINE, Minn. (May 1, 2010) – Two second half goals carried the Austin Aztex past the NSC Minnesota Stars 2-1 Saturday night in front of 753 fans at the NSC Stadium. Goals for the Aztex in the last 15 minutes from Eddie Johnson and Jamie Watson canceled out Brian Cvilikas’ first-half opener as the Stars lost their second consecutive home game.

"Obviously, it’s very disappointing to lose two in a row at home, but I thought we responded to adversity much better than Wednesday [in a 3-0 loss to Rochester],” Stars head coach Manny Lagos said after the game.

The Stars now have a full week to recover and train ahead of a May 9 clash at Montreal. Lagos and the rest of the team are welcoming the rest, which comes after a dizzying start to the season that saw the team make trips to and from both coasts and Puerto Rico before playing three home games in eight games.

“The rest is huge for us,” Stars goalkeeper Joe Warren said. “We’ve been going fast game to game. It’s very important to get some rest for our legs.”

STARS FALL 3-0 TO HARD-CHARGING RHINOS

Two quick goals midway through the first half led the Rochester Rhinos past the NSC Minnesota Stars Wednesday night at NSC Stadium.

Tino Nunez helped create former Minnesota Thunder midfielder Rich Costanzo’s opening goal before getting behind the Minnesota defense for two goals of his own as Rochester moved to 2-1-1 on the season. The Stars fell to 2-3 in the USSF D-2 Pro League this season.

“Tonight’s just one of those nights where as a team we just didn’t play at the level needed to win the game,” Stars head coach Manny Lagos said after the match.

National Sports Center in Full Swing to Get Stadium Ready for Home Opener on Saturday

by Brian Quarstad

Walking onto the grounds of the National Sports Center Stadium Wednesday afternoon, there was a unmistakable sense of urgency in the air. Golf carts would suddenly appear from around the corner, shoot by with one or two passengers and disappear around another corner as quickly as they came. Lawn mowers were making constant swipes at the turf, never slowing down while turning around or backing up. Painters rolled their bright yellow paint and carpenters laid on big swatches of drywall mud. It seemed everywhere you looked were people working at a fevered pitch.

This Saturday, April 24, at 7:05 p.m., the NSC Minnesota Stars will play their first home game this year. In fact this is more than a home opener. This is the team’s inaugural home game for the new sports franchise. So the employees at the NSC really do feel a sense of urgency as they prepare the stadium for the first ever Minnesota Stars soccer game.

Kahn: A festival of football

Oliver Kahn requires few words by way of introduction. The German footballing legend is a well-known and popular figure around the world. In the course of an illustrious goalkeeping career, the man nicknamed Titan achieved almost all there is to achieve. His honours collection includes medals as a FIFA World Cup™ runner-up, European champion, German champion, German cup winner, UEFA Champions League winner and Toyota Intercontinental Cup winner, to name but the most prestigious.

Kahn also received a welter of individual honours, including Best Player and Goalkeeper at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, World Goalkeeper of the Year (1999, 2001, 2002) and European Goalkeeper of the Year (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002), all testimony to his towering stature within the game.

After a 21-year career at the highest level, Kahn finally hung up his gloves in May 2008. Two years earlier, in the third-place play-off at the 2006 FIFA World Cup on home soil, the Titan had brought down the curtain on an international career for Germany spanning 86 matches, 49 of which he played as captain.

Is this England's World Cup hope? Goalkeepers who wear red save twice as many penalties

By Jenny Hope

England's world cup hopes may not be down to Wayne Rooney's performance - but the colour of the keeper's shirt, claim psychologists.

If the team wants to escape the trauma of previous penalty shoot-outs, then putting the England goalkeeper in a red shirt could be the answer.

New research reveals that strikers are twice as likely to miss the net if the goalkeeper is in red.The colour's primeval links with danger and dominance appear to put the striker at a disadvantage, causing him to perform worse, according to sports psychologists.

Spanish Inquisition: Iker Casillas vs Victor Valdes - Who Is The Better Goalkeeper?

Goal.com's Paul Macdonald considers whether the Barcelona man has surpassed San Iker as Spain's best.

For over a decade, there has been an undisputed number one in the city of Madrid. Since winning the UEFA Champions League in Paris at the tender age of 19, Iker Casillas has been the guardian, and the inspirational last line of defense for both Real Madrid and Spain.

In the ten years that have passed, he has rarely missed a step, and the majority of football fans will name 'San Iker' among the greatest goalkeepers in the world.
